Q: How does PowerX work?

A: Power X utilizes a Microsoft ActiveX Control and offers many features such as drag'n drop, file synchronization, and it provides the user with the ability to upload and download folders (and their contents). The only functionality missing from PowerX that is available through the default interface (SwapDrive Light) is the ability for the user to move files and folders from one location to another within an account.

Keep in mind there are significant system requirements to use the PowerX interface. Your system must be a Windows-based machine, running Win98 or later. The software will only work with Internet Explorer 5.0 or later - so Netscape and other browser users cannot use this interface. Perhaps most importantly, PowerX employs file transfer protocol (FTP) behind the scenes as opposed to SwapDrive Light's use of hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP). This is what gives PowerX the power to reliably transfer huge files and multiple files.

Q: How do I start PowerX?

A: Login to your account.

Choose the 'PowerX Interface' button from the top of your account’s Home Directory.

Read the instruction page carefully and choose the 'First Time Users' button on the lower right hand corner of the screen.

Continue to follow the prompts and review the text in order to fully launch PowerX.

Q: How do I determine how much space I have in my account?

A: At the top of your Home Directory page you will see a thick gray bar illustrating your account space.

As files are uploaded to your account, blue will slowly fill the gray bar and text at the base of the bar will indicate how many megabytes of space are used and how many remain available.

Q: How do I upload files to my account?

A: Login to your account.

SwapDrive Light:

Choose the "upload" button on the right hand column of buttons on your account’s Home Directory.

You will then see a screen named (Upload Files) with nine blank fields.

You may type specific file names in those fields or use the "browse" option to search your hard drive(s) for the files you wish to store. You cannot upload folders, only files using this interface. There are other methods available that will allow you to use drag-n-drop to transfer multiple files and folders. Specific instructions showing how to use the PowerX interface and third-party FTP software are available.

If you type a file name yourself, you will need to enter the complete file path; for example, c:\documents\expenses\weeklyexpenses.xls

Once you have selected all the files you wish to store in your account, click the 'upload' button at the bottom of your screen

A small progress box will appear as your files are transferred. Note: If the file you are uploading is very small, it may finish transferring before the small progress box even has a chance to appear.

Once the process is complete you will be returned to your account's main page where you will see your folders or files listed in your Current Directory.

PowerX:

There are two ways to upload files to your account using the PowerX interface: (1) Drag 'n Drop, and (2) Right-mouse click and 'Put'. The easiest way to use this interface is to re-size your web browser to occupy one side of your screen then open Windows Explorer and re-size it to occupy the other half of the screen.

To Drag 'n Drop, you can simply click on a file within your computer and drag it from your desktop or Windows Explorer into your SwapDrive account. The benefit of using drag 'n drop is that you can move folders in addition to individual files. As files and folders are dragged into your SwapDrive account, you will see the icons for your newly transferred files appear in your SwapDrive Directory.

Q: How do I manage and group files in my account?

A: It can be helpful to organize your files into logical locations within your account. This is most easily accomplished by creating folders. Folders can be ‘nested’ (placed within one another). To create new folders, follow these steps:

Choose 'New Folder' from the button menu along the left side.

A screen will prompt you to enter a name for the new folder.

After you have assigned a name to the new folder, press the 'New Folder' button.

You will be returned to your account’s main page where you may select the files and/or folders you would like to include in your new folder by checking the boxes next to their icons. To place files into the new folder, click the check boxes next to the files you wish to move then click on the 'Move' button.

You will then be prompted to select a folder from a drop down menu that you would like the files transferred to.

After you have selected your new folder’s name from the list press 'Move'. The files and folders you moved will now be stored inside the single folder you created.

Q: How do I move a file or folder from one folder to another?

A: Login to your account.

SwapDrive Light:

Chose the files and folders you would like to move by checking the boxes next to their names and icons.

Press the 'Move' button on the left screen menu.

You will be prompted to choose which existing folder you would like to move your data into from a drop-down list.

PowerX:

This is a short-coming of the PowerX interface... you cannot move files from within the interface. To move the files to a different folder, you have two options. First, you can download them to your computer and upload them to the desired location within your SwapDrive account. Alternatively, you can switch to the SwapDrive Light interface and move them using the options available there.

Q: How do I delete a file or folder?

A: Login to your account.

SwapDrive Light:

Click on the small check-box(es) next to the files or folders you wish to delete, a check mark will appear in the box(es) you have chose. In order to cancel a selection simply click on the box once more and the check mark will disappear.

Click on the 'Delete' button in the left hand button column.

The item(s) you have selected will no longer be listed in you current directory and are permanently removed from your SwapDrive account. Remember... once you have deleted a file there is no way to recover the file or otherwise 'undo' your action.

PowerX:

Click on the file or folders you wish to delete.

Press the 'delete' key. You will be prompted to confirm the deletion. Clicking YES will delete the file.

Another option is to right-click your mouse on the file or folder you wish to delete and scroll down to the option labeled 'Delete'. Again, you will be prompted with an "Are you sure you wish to delete..." message. Clicking YES will delete the file.

Q: How do I share my folders with another SwapDrive user?

A: Open the folder you would like to share and click the 'Share This Directory' link.

Other users can be given varying levels of access to the folders you share with them. You can grant either 'read', 'read/write', or 'read/write/delete' access to the folders you share.

Depending upon what access you grant, the buttons a user sees when he accesses the folder you shared will vary according to the access level you have assigned. For example, if you share a folder with a user but restrict access to ‘read only’, when they view that folder they will not see any of the other file management buttons they are accustomed to seeing such as move, rename, or delete.

Type the UserID(s) of the SwapDrive user(s) you wish to share the folder with in the Grant Access menu.

Click on the 'Share Folder' link.

- top -

Q: How do I remove another user's access to my folders?

A: After you have granted access to other users you will see a list of your shared files at the top part of the 'Share Your Drive' page. There are check boxes to the left of the access notes, left-click once on the boxes next to the shared folders you wish to remove shared access to.

Choose the 'Remove Share' link and the folders you selected will no longer be shared with the users to whom you had granted access.

- top -

Q: How do I view folders that another user has shared with me?

A: Choose the folder you wish to view from the dropdown menu. You will know what level of access you have to the files within the shared folder by looking at the code found at the very end of the folder name.

R - Read Only
R/W - Read and Write
R/W/D - Read/Write and Delete

Click the 'Go!' button to jump to the shared folder. Depending upon what access you were granted, the buttons you see will vary according to the access level you have been assigned. For example, if a folder was shared with you, but access was restricted to ‘read only’, when you view that folder you will not see any of the other file management buttons that you are accustomed to seeing such as move, rename, or delete.

Q: How do I synchronize files and folders between my PC and SwapDrive?

A: You can use the PowerX interface to synchronize folders between your SwapDrive account and your local machine. In this context, 'synchronize' means the software will make an exact copy of a folder in two locations. When you instruct the software to make a copy of your remote files and to place the copy on your local machine, if there are previous files already located in the local destination folder, the synchronization software will delete the local files as it performs the synchronization process (so that both the local and the remote folders have synchronized or identical content).

Login to your account.

When the file tree appears on your screen, right-mouse click on the folder you wish to synchronize with a folder on your computer.

Click on the browse button to navigate to the desired folder on your PC. You will see many options that you can select or de-select before you begin the synchronization process.

The critical point to remember is that you need to decide whether you want copy your SwapDrive folders to your local machine or copy your local folders to your SwapDrive account. You will notice the interface has two "Synchronize" buttons. The one you should click depends upon which end you are trying to synchronize (local or remote).
